Bill Haning is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), University of 撸sir视频ʻi, having served as the Director of Medical Doctorate Programs for the medical school until retirement (2017). He remains Director of Addiction Psychiatry/Addiction Medicine Residency Training Programs, Principal Investigator for the Pacific Addiction Research Center (PARC), member of the Boards of Directors of both the 撸sir视频 Alumni Association and the Pacific Health, Research & Education Institute (PHREI), President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), Editor-in-Chief of the ASAM Weekly, and immediate past Chair of the Examination Committee, Addiction Psychiatry, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).

A 撸sir视频uate of Punahou School (1967), he earned his AB in Philosophy from Princeton University (1971), and his MD with the first 撸sir视频uating class of the John A. Burns School of Medicine of the University of 撸sir视频ʻi at 撸sir视频 (1975). Originally in general and emergency medical practice, he trained and became certified in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and addiction medicine. He has been a clinician, educator, and researcher with 撸sir视频 since 1989.

Haning has been very fortunate. He is a member of the American College of Psychiatrists (ACP), a Distinguished Fellow ASAM, and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). His teaching awards include the APA’s Nancy C.A. Roeske Certificate; the John M. Hardman Award for Mentorship from JABSOM; the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award; Punahou’s Dr. Charles S. Judd, Jr. Award for humanitarian services; and the 撸sir视频 Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching. In 2014, the 撸sir视频ʻi Medical Association designated him 撸sir视频ʻi’s Physician of the Year. In 2018, he received the Hon. James S. Burns Award for Community Service. In 2019, he received the ASAM Annual Award for contributions to the field of addiction medicine. The Force Surgeon for U.S. Marine Forces Pacific and for Marine Forces Central Command in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Haning subsequently served as Division Psychiatrist, 4th Marine Division. He retired from the Navy as a Captain in 2009; his awards include the Legion of Merit.

His avocations are history and exercise, although he is a master of neither. He is the completely undeserving spouse of Libby Char, MD, FACEP, FAAEM.
