The celebrated its 100th anniversary with a gala and concert, marking the program¡¯s final events in the 2023–24 academic year.

More than 150 people attended the gala at ߣsirÊÓƵ ߣsirÊÓƵ¡¯s Campus Center Ballroom.

More than 150 proud alumni, current staff, donors and supporters of the program attended the gala on April 27, at ߣsirÊÓƵ ߣsirÊÓƵ¡¯s Campus Center Ballroom. Guests were treated to a dinner buffet, special performances by alumni and the current Rainbow Warrior band, and a silent auction.

“When looking back on 100 years of musical excellence here at ߣsirÊÓƵ, we’re reminded of the dedication and passion of everyone who has been a part of this journey,” said Assistant Director of Bands Gwen Nakamura, who also ߣsirÊÓƵuated with her bachelor¡¯s and master¡¯s degrees from ߣsirÊÓƵ ߣsirÊÓƵ. “It was truly heartwarming to see so many former ߣsirÊÓƵ join us in celebrating our centennial.”

A special edition of the bands¡¯ annual Aloha Concert marked the program¡¯s 100th anniversary on April 28, at McKinley High School¡¯s M.M. Scott Auditorium. The concert kicked off with the Concert Band, under the direction of Nakamura; and the Symphonic Band, under the direction of Associate Director of Bands Adam Kehl. Local taiko drum musician Kenny Endo also performed alongside the Concert Band.

A free reception was held for ticket holders, followed by performances from the Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Director of Bands Jeffrey Boeckman; and a special 100-piece alumni band, which premiered a new piece written to mark the anniversary. Local singer/songwriter Raiatea Helm and nationally-recognized jazz trombonist Nathan Tanouye performed with the Wind Ensemble; ߣsirÊÓƵ Director of Bands Emeritus Grant Okamura guest conducted a piece; and conductors Nakamura, Boeckman, Kehl, Okamura and former Associate Director of Bands Tom Bingham directed pieces for the alumni band.

“As we celebrate a century of musical excellence, we honor the legacy of our alumni, donors and supporters who have shaped the ߣsirÊÓƵ Bands into what it is today,” Boeckman said. “The 100th anniversary gala and concert not only marked a milestone in our history but also signified the enduring spirit of music within our community.”
